She, Jackson & Orszag (1990) – Intermittent vortex structures in homogeneous isotropic turbulence

Numerical simulations are reported which show that there are remarkably simple spatial structures associated with intermittent regions of vorticity. In particular, high-amplitude vortex structures are found which are tubelike and generate local velocity fields that spiral around them. This contrasts with the classical description of turbulence as an array of ‘pancake’- or ‘lasagne’-like eddies.
